Nicole & Teith

Why Nicole & Teith began

Some companions never say a word, yet walk beside us for years.

They are the familiar presence waiting at home, the footsteps we know by heart, an irreplaceable part of the family. When that companionship ends, we lose more than a “pet”. We lose a real relationship.

We founded Nicole & Teith so that this love and grief could be truly seen. We want the final journey to offer clear arrangements, gentle guidance and a farewell that belongs to the family.

We cherish the everyday companionship pets share with their families, and bring that same care to their final goodbye.

They came into our home, and into our lives.

My wife and I are a DINK (Double Income, No Kids) couple. Later, we adopted Nicole Lim.

She was like a little angel who had found her way into our home, bringing companionship and so much joy to our life together. For me, her presence meant something especially profound. In the days we shared, I emerged from the depression I had experienced and rediscovered the joy of living.

When Nicole was two, we adopted a little feline brother for her: Teith Boy.

With these two siblings, our home became livelier, filled with affection, concern and everyday moments together. They are my children, and Nicole & Teith is named after them.

We know that one day, we will have to say goodbye.

When Nicole was six, we began to realise that one day, we would have to face saying goodbye to them.

At the time, that day still felt far away. Sharing life and happiness together already filled our hearts. We had not thought deeply about what we would arrange, or how we would cope, when goodbye finally came.

Back then, my understanding of pet aftercare was limited. I thought it simply meant arranging cremation, deciding whether to bring the ashes home, and that would be the end of it.

A friend’s experience later helped me see that arrangements may come to an end, but the grief of those left behind does not end with them.

A moment of care helped me see what it means to be there.

About two years ago, a friend lost her beloved pet, Money.

During that time, she shared photographs of her farewell to Money on Facebook almost every day. Through those images and words, I could sense how deeply she missed her beloved companion. With pets of my own, I understood that she had lost a cherished member of her family.

I reached out to her on WhatsApp, then called to listen as she spoke about Money and everything she was struggling to let go of. I also prayed with her, hoping that in her grief, she would feel heard and know that someone understood how deeply this loss hurt.

She was deeply moved and told me that although many people had tried to comfort her after Money’s passing, she still felt that few truly understood why she was hurting so much. Some words of comfort even left her wondering, “Do others see Money as just a dog? Am I not supposed to feel this sad?”

But that time, she said, the comfort felt different. As a pastor, I had accompanied people through loss; having pets of my own also helped me understand that Money was family to her. During that call, I listened and prayed with her. She told me she finally felt that someone understood her grief and recognised how much she loved Money.

Her words stayed with me. I began to see how listening to someone speak about a beloved pet, and taking their tears seriously, could help them feel less alone in their grief. Perhaps this was something I could offer other families, too.

Money’s passing also led me to discover a provider that approached pet farewells with great care. I realised that every detail, from caring for a pet to supporting the family, could offer comfort and give those left behind the time and space to say a heartfelt goodbye.

I came to see that my experience of supporting people through loss, together with the love I share with my own pets, could help me understand another family’s grief—and walk alongside them through it.

Bringing pastoral care to a pet’s final journey.

Through years of pastoral ministry, I have walked alongside families through illness, death, bereavement and grief.

These experiences have taught me that when a life ends, care is needed not only for the one who has gone, but also for those who remain and are learning to live with loss.

When a pet dies, that grief can be especially easy to overlook. Some people say, “It was only a dog, only a cat!”

What they do not see is the familiar presence waiting for us at home, the companion who quietly comes close when we are sad, and the name we have grown so used to calling, knowing someone will respond.

After they are gone, their bowl is still there. The place where they slept is still there. Out of habit, we still call their name, only now, they no longer come.

The one we miss is family, someone we have shared our life with for years.

My friend’s experience made me reflect: when families lose a beloved pet they cherish as their child, could we do more, so they do not have to bear their loss while also explaining why it hurts so much?

Turning a heartfelt calling into care.

Over the next two years, I often visited that provider’s website to learn about its services and the details of its care. Gradually, a thought took shape: perhaps one day, I could bring my experience of accompanying people in pastoral ministry into caring for families saying goodbye to their pets.

In 2026, my wife and I began preparing to establish Nicole & Teith, bringing our love for our two fur kids, together with a pastoral understanding of life, farewell and grief, into this service.

Nicole & Teith

Nicole & Teith is more than a pet memorial brand. It carries what we have come to understand about companionship through our family life and my pastoral ministry.

Our hope goes beyond arranging cremation. We want to help families make sense of the next steps when they feel helpless, guide them through a meaningful goodbye, and remain willing to listen afterwards when the longing still feels heavy, so they continue to have a space to miss and remember their beloved companion.
